Scattered thunderstorms can form when the atmosphere is unstable, which means that there is a lot of warm, moist air near the ground and a lot of cold, dry air aloft. When these two air masses meet, the warm, moist air rises, creating updrafts. These updrafts can then reach high into the atmosphere, where they cool and condense into clouds.
